About the poets

Mixed-heritage poet Kaycee Hill has an MA in Creative Writing from the University of Bristol. She won the inaugural James Berry Poetry Prize in 2023 and her debut collection Hot Sauce was published by Bloodaxe later that year. Sound system culture and sonic inheritance form the foundation of her current work, which examines themes of connection and community.

Kate Noakes has published eight collections of poetry and a pamphlet, the most recent are Goldhawk Road (Two Rivers Press, 2023) and Chalking the Pavement (Broken Sleep Books, 2024). Of Welsh heritage, she has a PhD in Creative Writing from the University of Reading.

Elizabeth Parker has an MA in Mythology from Bristol University. Her two Seren collections are In Her Shambles (2018) and Cormorant (2024). Born in London and growing up in The Forest of Dean, Elizabeth’s poetry explores her and her family’s origins— from ancestors in Ireland to her parents’ roots in Liverpool and Smethwick.

We had a glorious spring evening with author and forager Andy Hamilton learning all about the tasty treasures that are waiting to be discovered in St Georges Park.

Andy was so generous with his knowledge and time and it was really interesting to learn about foraged plants that can be used for teas, pickling, spicing up your meals and even homebrewed alcoholic delights.

It was a feast for the senses as we traipsed, picked, smelled and tasted our way through the park. I think we all agreed that three-cornered leek was our favourite! (Similar in flavour to spring onion with a hint of garlic.)

We all left with delicious homemade biscuits and teabags, courtesy of Andy. He really went above and beyond!

Chantal Lyons is a naturalist, writer and science communicator. Her first book, Groundbreakers, won the Marsh Book of the Year 2024 and was also shortlisted and highly commended for the Wainwright Prize for Writing on Conservation. Chantal currently lives in Gloucester, never too far from the boar.

Sophie Pavelle is a US-born and UK-based science communicator. She worked for Beaver Trust and presented their award-winning documentary Beavers Without Borders. She is an Ambassador for The Wildlife Trusts and sat on the RSPB England Advisory Committee. Her writing has appeared in The Guardian, National Geographic Traveller, New Scientist, The Independent and BBC magazines. Her first book, Forget Me Not, was widely praised for encouraging action against climate change and biodiversity loss.

Hugh Warwick is an author and ecologist with a particular passion for hedgehogs. His most recent book, Cull of the Wild, however, takes him into new, and challenging, territory as he explores the tensions that arise when conservationists are faced with the prospect of killing one species to save another. These tensions are practical and ethical and - spoiler alert - there are no easy answers!

We travelled back in time to the Middle Ages exploring how folklore, incantations and charms were once happily interwoven with Christian beliefs.

Then we rolled up our tunics and got lost in the misty, liminal spaces of boglands, marshes and meres, where time seems to bend and slow down.

It's a stunning debut graphic novel, in which the sole inhabitant of a ghost town finds an unlikely companion in a mysterious flower, going to extraordinary lengths to preserve it.

Gorgeous and quietly emotional. Bold, bright colours offset and accentuate the melancholic tone, and the design feels simultaneously 80s-inpired and modern. Mind-bending scenes and innovative panelling make it a truly immersive experience, so while you may not know which way is up, you'll be sure to enjoy the ride. It's a stunner of a reflection on loneliness, friendship and loving care.

books exploring this theme!

Cloud Boy by @gregstobbs_illustration

A fun and imaginative book about a little boy called Bobby
who can’t help floating up to the clouds when he’s distracted.
When Bobby tries to be more grounded like everyone else, he loses his spark.
Can his friends and family figure out how to be a bit more ‘Bobby’?
There are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments and Bobby’s energetic personality is captured wonderfully in the illustrations and flashes of pink.

Wiggling Words by @katerolfeart

This book takes wordplay to a whole new level! Through very clever illustrations and a text that joyfully bounces along, the reader is taken on a journey through tricky words and tumbling letters. Though confounding at first, we discover that words can be fun when you do things your own way. The illustrations rendered in a vibrant two-colour palette and with printed textures make each page turn a delight!

Gina Kaminski Saves The Wolf by @whycraigwhy & @theephantomscribbler

Gina Kaminski is a force to be reckoned with! She knows what she likes and what she finds to be true. When Gina reads Red Riding Hood and notices some errors in the story, she sets off with her backpack and steely determination to write the fairytale her own way and save the Big Bad Wolf!
Brilliantly illustrated throughout in bold outlines and bright colour by Francis Martin, this is a fun story which upends a classic fairytale and shows Gina’s inner life through cleverly placed emoticons.
